LIFEHOUSE PRODUCTIONS RECEIVES RX CLUB SHOW AWARD OF EXCELLENCE FOR MEDICAL COMPUTER ANIMATION

WALLINGFORD, Connecticut --(October 19, 1999)--LifeHouse Productions, LLC has received an Rx Club Show Award of Excellence for their animation entitled "Deer Tick: The Monstrous Vector of Lyme Disease". The animation was selected by a judging committee comprised of leading producers and directors in the medical advertising field.

The Rx Club Show is a worldwide annual competition that honors the very best examples of medical advertising and graphics created during the preceding year.

As it appears in the prestigious show, the animation does more than show a deer tick. It evokes emotion from its viewers. As the scene begins, the camera flies in through a jungle of hairs on the surface of the skin. From a medium close up shot, the tick walks into the scene. Here, out of focus, it looks like a tarantula. The creature hesitates, turns and then crawls right towards the viewer. When the viewer is face to face with this hideous bug- WHAM!- it plunges its ugly saw-toothed snout right into the skin. "We wanted to scare the viewer into taking action to protect themselves from a Deer Tick bite," says Partner and Medical Artist Dena Winkleman. "The animation really creeps you out!" Partner and Lead Animator "Wild Bill" Matthews adds, "Our attention to timing and anticipation really helped make that statement. As medical illustrators, receiving this award means a lot to us. It's a great honor."

LifeHouse Productions modeled and animated the sequence with Alias|Wavefront's Maya running on a Dell Dimension 610 NT Workstation then composited it with Adobe After Effects. Actual deer ticks were used as reference for construction of the 3D-computer model. To confirm the anatomy and physiology of the Deer Tick, Matthews met with world renowned tick expert, Dr Kirby Stafford, of The Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station. Lyme Disease, which was named for the town Lyme, Connecticut where the disease was first discovered, has a high incidence in that state. During the bite an infected tick transfers a spirochete bacteria, Borrelia burgdorferi, which causes the disease.

The Rx Club Show will announce the Gold and Silver Award winners at the invitation-only opening night Monday November 8, 1999 at The Metropolitan Pavilion 123 West 18th Street, 14th floor (between 5th and 6th avenue). The Rx Club Show will be open to the public from Tuesday November 9th through Thursday November 11th, where all will be free to browse and view samples of all aspects of the industry. Hours Tuesday through Thursday are 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
