interest from a wart-removal company in search of a videotape to play at trade shows.
Matthews discovered his talent while enrolled in a
biological illustration class at a Los Angeles high school. He attended Long Beach State
University, where he earned a biology degree and certification in biological illustration.
He attended graduate school at the Texas Health and Science Center in Dallas- one of only
six colleges at the time to offer a masters degree in medical illustration.
While attending a medical illustrators' conference in
Orlando, Fla., Matthews sensed his life was about to take a turn north.
Matthews met Winkleman, then a college senior, at the
conference.
Winkleman attended Lyman Hall High School where one of her
drawings still hangs in the science department. After earning a biology degree from the
University of Connecticut in Storrs, Winkleman continued her education at the University
of Illinois in Chicago, specializing in virtual reality education with 3-D applications.
She earned a masters of associated medical sciences degree in biomedical visualization.
